This policy brief summarizes findings from a research project assessing how sustainable energy solutions can promote biodiversity conservation and support community development in Kuku Group Ranch, Kenya. The study explored current energy access and usage patterns, the impacts of traditional biomass fuel use on land and biodiversity, and the socio-economic benefits of transitioning to clean energy.
Findings indicate that reliance on biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal contributes significantly to deforestation, land degradation, and loss of wildlife habitats. At the same time, limited access to modern energy constrains livelihoods and economic opportunities. The study underscores the potential of clean and sustainable energy technologies such as solar and biogas to reduce environmental degradation while improving local well-being.
Integrating clean energy into conservation strategies offers a pathway for achieving both ecological sustainability and socio-economic resilience in pastoral communities. The policy brief calls for coordinated action between conservation agencies, government institutions, and local communities to mainstream sustainable energy within conservation and development planning.
